We're so proud of Carly Kizorek for her recent feature in Nelson's Today as an "International Filmmaker and Tutor"!

Not many math tutors have also produced films about students in Liberia, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. duate from North Central College, Carly has worked in ten countries in the last twelve months. She has also written a book about her adventures, already in print and soon out on the iPad.

Although her day-to-day work is as a private math tutor in the western suburbs of Chicago, she just had to submit her passport to the State Department for them to put in extra pages. “One of the problems,” according to Carly, “is that half the countries I visit have visas that fill up an entire page of the passport, so the pages fill up quickly.”

“To say I have an interesting life is an understatement,” she went on to say. “Two of the last films I produced involved bringing to life the work of two international organizations, IRC and IIRR. For IRC, I went to Ganta, in northern Liberia, to show how the International Rescue Committee uses special teaching techniques that are specific to children whose lives have been disrupted by war or disasters. In southern Ethiopia, I had to travel for 14 hours over fog-shrouded mountains and arid, camel-filled valleys before finally getting to where the schools were located. There, the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction set up programs to follow pastoral (animal herding) families around providing teachers for the children. The curriculum and teaching hours were customized to fit into the work activities of the kids.”

After the trips, Carly comes back to her video production studio in Lisle and works with professional editors, directs the post production, chooses music and voice actors, and creates compelling documentary films.

Carly is not bashful about her observations on the public school system. “Each teacher has between 90 and 150 students every day and even the best teachers aren’t able to spend an hour of one-on-one time with each student. That is what I love about tutoring–I get that hour to find small pieces of missing information that the kid needs to really understand the material.”

We'll be tuned in and watching it down here from Ixtapa, Mexico, where we've been all week at the most phenomenal conference I've ever attended. For those of you who are really interested in collaborating on the effort to combat global poverty, I might be able to get you an invitation to next year's Opportunity Collaboration.

Stay tuned for the unveiling of a MASSIVE new project I'm working on to team up 100 student filmmakers with 100 non-profits for a groundbreaking study. There's been tremendous excitement and support for my idea at the conference. It will be fun to watch this thing unfold.

Bill Kizorek is an adept storyteller.

Looking through the lens of a camera, the Lisle resident documents people and communities around the world. His passport reads like a world atlas.

From Myanmar, Moldova, Tanzania, Guatemala, Jordan and Burkina Faso, Kizorek's videos tell the wonderful work of nonprofit groups.

"We are so fortunate to live in this country," Kizorek said. "There are so many people in the world living on a dollar a day, and so many Americans doing so much to help the world that I want to bring it to light and document it."

Highlighting humanitarian organizations at work is a hallmark of Two Parrot Productions.

Kizorek, together with his daughter Jessica Kizorek, founded the company simply named for two parrots the family owned. The group has grown to include daughter Carly Kizorek, Bill's wife, Janie Kizorek, and his brother, John Kizorek, as producers.

The father-daughter team is well-qualified with a global perspective. An author of nine books on video and risk management, Bill also has helped produce segments for the four major TV networks and traveled to 150 countries.

Jessica Kizorek has written four video-related books and appeared on the CNN show "Young People Who Rock."

A five-hour trek through the Congo to see the silverback gorilla, feeding schoolchildren in Tanzania and filming in Cameroon at the Jimmy Carter Center for River Blindness are all part of the job.

Most adventures take a two-person crew one week. The exception was a trip to Cambodia that took 44 hours just to reach the site. Back in the Lisle studio, every hour of raw video translates into 40 hours of editing. The result is a captivating 6- to 8- minute video a group uses to explain its mission, raise money and expand its impact.

"We want to document the positive effects charities have on the impoverished people we film," Carly said. "We show the contrasts of what things were like before and what the group is doing to help."

"It warms our hearts, and we want to create a film to tell the story," Bill said.

Bill has been behind a camera for as long as he can remember.

"I remember when you needed to stick a flashbulb into a camera to take a picture," he said, laughing at the thought.

After graduating from Loyola University with an English degree and a tour of duty in the military, Bill sharpened his skills in investigation and video production. He founded InPhoto Surveillance and was its successful CEO for 20 years.

When he sold the company 11 years ago, he donated many of his frequent flier miles to charities and his work took its current direction.

Most of Bill's career was spent in the video production business as an internationally known authority on insurance fraud and video surveillance. His experience uncovering the shady characters in life makes his work with the philanthropic set all the sweeter.

Today, Bill has a desktop computer capable of producing documentary films fit for an I-Max theater. Together with a laptop, several cameras, five lenses and boom microphone, the crew travels light.

"Invariably, we are landing in a different time zone, and the toughest part of the first day is to make sure we hit the ground running with all our equipment," Bill said.

Even traveling light, necessities include charged batteries, mosquito net, duck tape, water purification tablets, special Insect Shield-treated clothing and even a tooth repair kit. Along with a passport, the crew has the precautionary inoculations to travel to the remote corners of the world.

Each member needs to be prepared for whatever may come his or her way, such as tsetse flies, fire ants and malarial mosquitoes. Wherever the assignment, having electricity, screens and warm water often are luxuries.

Two Parrot Productions' clients include World Concern, Lions Club International Foundation, Lutheran World Relief and Doctors on Call for Service. Closer to home, the village of Lisle is a client.

Over the past year, the Kizorek family filmed a documentary about the village to reflect why the community is a great place to live and work. In 2007, Money Magazine cited Lisle in its top 20 of America's Best Places to Live in its population group and the video is designed to show why.

Bill, together with Carly and Mike Jais of Graphics Plus in Lisle, filmed several videos and a group from the village helped assess the final product.

"A major use of the video will be to help attract new businesses to the village by outlining the economic opportunities that exist in Lisle," said Catherine Schuster, Lisle's economic development director.

A 30-second video pulled from the longer version will air this summer on cable television.

"I believe residents will enjoy seeing their community showcased in this manner," Schuster said. "Lisle is a community that intelligently blends innovation with a respect for nature to offer outstanding work, life and visitor experiences. Its powerful presence energizes people, sparks innovation and inspires creativity."

"We discovered so many little gems in Lisle," Bill said. "We have traveled the world and what our area has to offer is amazing."

The Village of Lisle is serious about its image. The Village Board has just approved the hiring of Two Parrot Productions to create three films. One film would be a six to eight minute documentary style film about the Village, its services, and the way of life that has been so appealing to many of the residents: living in a community so infused with and surrounded by nature.

Two other segments are to be produced. One is a lead-in for the Village Meeting broadcast, and another is a thirty second commercial.

Videotaping will take place over the next seven months and include Village services, such as leaf pickup and snow removal, as well as well and police and fire department segments. A committee of four village officials: Catherine Schuster, Dennis Gilbertson, Eric Ertmoed, and Marcia Amos studied proposals from a variety of firms and eventually chose a Lisle production company. Two Parrot Productions is owned by Bill and Jessica Kizorek, a father and daughter team that has filmed in over 40 countries. Bill has lived in Lisle for over twenty years and has, during that time, appeared on, or helped produce shows for Oprah, 20/20, the BBC, and all the major networks. Jessica went to CU Boulder, graduated magna cum laude, and has won the Vision Award Gold Medal for Excellence in Video Production.

According to Bill Kizorek, "this is a real honor for us to be involved in the project. The Village officials we interviewed with were determined to create a set of films that would reflect the quality of life of the residents here, and why this is such a great place to live. Money Magazine cited Lisle as one of the best 20 places in the country to live, and we will be illustrating those reasons in the final production. This will include festivals, like the Lights of Lisle that opens up with a parade December 5th."

The Kizoreks have created documentary films around the world, most recently for Lions Club International Foundation, filming in Cameroon at the Jimmy Carter Center for River Blindness. The digital timer was running fast. Laptops were switched out every five minutes. The students were sweating.

Big money was at stake, as was the fame. For the dozen finalist teams of the BrandAide contest at the Miami Ad school Tuesday, each had only 5 minutes to prove the brilliance of their creative idea to the chief judge Chuck Porter, Chairman of Crispin Porter + Bogusky. At 11:30am, after a tough deliberation, three teams were awarded $3,000 in cash prizes. Ecstatic as they were, however, the students weren’t the biggest winners.

Wanting to help non-profit organizations to become more effective in achieving their missions, 50 students from the Miami Ad School faced off on May 17th in a contest to design innovative marketing campaigns for 3 local charitable organizations: Pelican Harbor Seabird Station, Hearing and Speech Center of Florida, and Family Counseling Services of Greater Miami.

The big winners on Tuesday were the members of Miami Dade County that will ultimately be served by the new fundraising capabilities of these three non-profit organizations.

Congrats to the winning creative students: Pelican Harbor (Alyssa Putnam and Kristina Krkljus), Family Counseling Services (Joseph Furmanek and Jennifer Kutchey), and the Hearing and Speech Center (Kevin Martin, JP Schwartz and Chris Vimini).

As a video producer, mostly of films about global charities, I travel all the time. In the last 10 months, I worked in Jordan, Ghana, Cambodia, Thailand, Congo and Rwanda.

According to the Travelers’ Century Club and its “official list of countries,” I have been in 150 countries. But according to the “official list of nations,” published by International Travel News, I have been in only 108.

While I am on the ground doing my job, I can get absolutely filthy. And I unfortunately often get up close and personal with various insects, including tsetse flies, malarial mosquitoes and fire ants. My wife demands that I don’t bring any of those bugs home in my luggage. She doesn’t want me to get sick from their bites, either.

To help keep my marriage blissful, I take precautions. Last year, I got $750 worth of inoculations, and could have broken the $1,000 mark if I opted for polio and rabies shots and a couple more shots the travel clinic wanted me to get.

I also wear special pants, shirts and socks that repel insects. On a recent five-hour trek through the Congo to see the silverback gorillas, those bug-resistant clothes saved me from the jaws of some aggressive Congolese ants.

Safety is another issue. In Ghana this year, my taxi was rear-ended by an out-of-control semi truck. We landed in a drainage ditch, and I had to kick out the rear window to escape.

I have also been the target of pickpockets. In Argentina, some thieves tried to use the “squirt mustard, let me help you wipe it off” ruse. That entails one thief, usually a woman, squirting mustard on your shirt, while another female thief immediately approaches you with tissues to help you wipe it off while poking her hand in your pocket.

There have been some wild travel moments. Once, before taking off from Rangoon (now called Yangon) to Bangladesh in a Boeing 707, an ashen-faced lady in front knelt on the seat, as if in prayer. She said she overheard the co-pilot tell the captain they should not try to fly the plane. According to her, the captain replied that they had no choice since there were no parts available in Burma (now Myanmar) to repair the plane. We flew under 5,000 feet all the way to Dhaka, and, fortunately, landed safely.

On another flight, I subdued an out-of-control female passenger who hit two attendants in the face. She wasn’t psychotic, but she was dehydrated. I made her drink three big glasses of water. She promptly fell asleep, only to awaken one hour later asking to be my girlfriend. My wife would frown on that. She went back to sleep, and woke up again as I was handing her over to some F.B.I. agents in Anchorage three hours later.

I often witness poverty and the human desperation that comes with it. Many people in other countries view America and Americans as boorish and insensitive. But I beam with pride that so many Americans are changing that view by helping those less fortunate, either by donations of money or services. In my own small way, I hope that I am helping to foster a positive perception of my countrymen. That’s important — so important that putting up with dehydrated passengers, subpar planes and those insects becomes just part of a day’s work.

BK puts Buzz Off to Work

In 2007, Bill Kizorek donated one million frequent flyer miles and video production crews to charity to film in Thailand, East and West Africa, and Cambodia. Malaria and other bug-related diseases were an issue at all the destinations. Even though Bill spent over $900 in vaccinations, he wrote ExOfficio that he felt his best defense against disease was his combination of ExOfficio shirt, pants, socks and hat tightly bonded with Buzz Off.

Doctors On Call for Service

Two Parrot crews are currently in Bukavua, Congo and Kigali, Rwanda documenting the non-profit activities of Doctors On Call for Service (DOCS). The videos we shoot will expand DOCS' ability to communicate its mission and inform medical professionals as to the opportunities available for them to contribute.

As part of Two Parrot's ongoing Charitable Partnership Program, Bill and Jessica Kizorek recently returned from Ghana. While in Ghana, they had two missions: the first was to document the effect that vitamins and glyco-nutrients had on impoverished children in Accra, the second was to make a documentary film about how Fair Trade cocoa bean farming around the Kumasi region had improved the quality of life for tens of thousands of workers. Manna Relief was supplying the food supplements, and Lutheran World Relief (LWR) was now in partnership with Divine Chocolate—the end product of the cocoa bean harvest.
